Step Out onto These Beautiful Balconies That Welcome the View

Homeowners want to put down roots in Kiawah Island for many reasons — not the least of which is the stunning waterfront property available for custom homes.

At Camens Architectural Group, we have decades of experience maximizing waterfront sites — from beach houses to marshland and riverfront residences.

And while every single one is unique and different, the one thing that they all share in common is a balcony — usually, multiple balconies!

Connecting an Indoor-Outdoor Lifestyle

When a house is in the presence of stunning natural surroundings — such as on Kiawah Island — the outdoor living experience becomes just as important as the interior.

“People crave interaction with nature — especially the water,” says chief architect Marc Camens. “On Kiawah, everyone wants to be outside — and the better we can connect the inside and the outside, the better people feel and the better energy flows.”

In this way, balconies act as a special connector to the outdoors. One such example is Casolar del Norte, where balconies extend and curve across all three levels of this contemporary design, encouraging and inviting a constant state of flow to the outside.

Wrapping homes around the way people live is all part of Marc’s unique approach to architecture — and this type of wraparound balcony fits the bill for homeowners wanting to constantly have easy access to the open air and the views beyond.

Walkout balconies can also be more intimate yet just as connected to the outdoors. In the Flyway residence, outdoor living was designed to include covered patios and porches in addition to charming balconies off primary and guest bedrooms for private access to fresh air and glorious views.

Framing the View in a Classic Way

Marc often takes inspiration from clients’ personal interests, lifestyles, and cherished memories. The very design of a Turtle Beach residence was born from the owners’ love of the sea — they had recently spent two years traveling the world by boat, so living by the water was essential for this couple.

Here, the reverse floor plan capitalizes on the views to the ocean and features the primary bedroom on the top level, allowing the owners to look out over the water from their private third-floor arched balcony.

Indeed, wherever there is a commanding view, a barrel arch is a beautiful way to frame it; after all, there’s a reason this classic, curved shape was used with such frequency in Renaissance architecture.
