What do Paul Bowman, Kent State University (KSU), and the South Carolina Lowcountry have in common? Marc Camens and Camens Architectural Group. From childhood, Paul built sculptures and models at summer camp and Art in the Park. Today, he’s the “go-to guy” for everything from renovation projects to new builds and is an integral member of a team of the best residential architects in the nation. We sat down with Paul to learn more about his personal and professional history and his role here at Camens Architectural Group.

How Did You Get Your Start?

When I was seven, I started building models and sculptures from wood scraps at various events. It was something that always fascinated me. I then started working a paper route, which ended up being the perfect rendition of customer service, and I even went on to own my own lawn maintenance company with a childhood friend.

After a 10-year stint in Vail, Colorado, and the Colorado Rocky Mountains studying, working, skiing, and fly fishing, I went back to college for my second degree – a Master’s in Architecture. I then moved to the South Carolina Lowcountry to pursue my dream of designing powerful, custom-build coastal dream homes. It’s been nothing less than a lucid dream come true ever since.

Where Do You Derive Inspiration?

As part of a team of the best residential architects anyone could hope to work with, I’m inspired by our past projects and how they build on each other. This and the continual quest for architectural details within the traditional Lowcountry vernacular create an easy dialect for the next solution for tomorrow. Our work always leaves me with a sense of satisfaction and accomplishment.

Can You Briefly Describe Your Role at Camens Architectural Group?

I’m usually the “go-to guy” for all projects, whether it’s a renovation or new home build. From filing drawings to organizing drawings – I always know where everything is. I’m a heavy closer to help get drawing sets get completed on time. Recently, I’m mostly managing and overseeing major and minor renovation projects from concept to completion. I have a passion for excellence, openness, and honesty and show up with this every day. I love bringing my experience to projects and supporting clients with all my time and attention they require and deserve.
