A Contemporary Masterpiece with Meaning on Lake Champlain
Chief architect Marc Camens’ approach is built on a set of guiding principles that are designed to create a cohesive environment for the homeowner and conjure an emotional response.
In the case of this contemporary masterpiece on Lake Champlain, the project evoked deep layers of meaning for Marc, too.
That’s because the home was designed in partnership with his dear friend, Larry, a structural engineer who passed away before construction began.
A timeless tribute to Larry
Marc’s longtime friendship with Larry extends back to the original house he designed for Larry and his wife in the 80s. Many years later, Camens Architectural Group also led the design for the home of Larry and his wife’s daughter, which is located just two lots down from this contemporary beauty.
There is no better way to honor Larry’s memory than with this new home that brings his contemporary vision to life — a home that his family will enjoy for many years to come.
The intersection of light and flow
As with all of Marc’s designs, light and flow are the heartbeat and lifeblood of this property. It feels open and free, yet simultaneously intimate and comforting.
Illuminated by the path of natural light throughout, the public areas easily flow from kitchen to dining to living zones.
Transitional elements, including flooring, ceiling details, and brick, delineate the different sections of the home by function. The bedrooms wrap up their respective dwellers in a quieter, more contained embrace.
Becoming one with nature
With the peaceful Lake Champlain across the road, this home was designed to be fully integrated into Mother Nature’s charms, blurring the lines between inside and out. The natural surroundings are maximized in every single room — right down to the tub vignette in the primary bathroom.
Large panes of glass bring the verdant green landscape inside and an extensive, wraparound deck on the second level invites owner and guests outside to take in the views.
Before even breaking ground, Camens personally walked the site many times over to orient every single square inch of the design.
Although the design takes a more contemporary approach, the natural stone on the façade and warm woods within likewise introduce a timeless fusion of elements.

From contemporary stunners like this home, to traditional Kiawah-style classics, and properties full of Adirondack grandeur, Marc doesn’t rely on any given style or aesthetic. Rather, he designs for the site and for the owner to bring visionary, one-of-a-kind designs to life. It’s what makes him one of the best residential architects in Lake Placid, NY, the coastal Carolinas, and beyond.
