How Spectacular Driveways Set the Tone
If a home’s driveway is not the first thing that comes to mind when you think about architectural design, you would not be alone!
But, for Camens Architectural Group chief architect Marc Camens, the driveway of a home is integral to every single project as the second layer of privacy off the street.
It’s not just a functional concrete path that services a car’s arrival. It’s an important handshake to both the street and to the home — and as an intermediary between the two, it can truly be a spectacular part of an entire property’s architectural composition.
Here’s how Camens thinks about the driveway as the part of each home’s grand entrance.
Personalized and Unique
Just like every one of Camens’ architectural designs is one-of-a-kind and wraps around the owners’ lives and lifestyle, the driveway does, too. No two driveways will ever look the same in his work, because no two homes are the same.
For Marc, early personal interaction with each home site is non-negotiable. This type of engagement with the topography of the land and its location isn’t only for the house’s architectural design. It serves many other purposes in the interest of the design, including the determination of the best transition from the road to the entrance sequence of the home itself.
In this way, he begins crafting an idea of what it might look like to approach the home as one drives up. Then, he considers what it might be like to move on foot from one’s car to perhaps a series of stairs that lead up to the front door. It all sets the stage for creating a welcoming feeling for visitors.
A great example of this is a property on Lemoyne Lane which features a sweeping driveway that simultaneously curves into the entry sequence of the home as well as towards the attached four-car garage that’s juxtaposed against the main structure. Each path intentionally and directionally signals the flow of pedestrian and vehicle traffic.
Design-Forward
Another key distinction of a spectacular driveway is in its design-forward details, which are enhanced by the respective materials used — from giant pavers, to pebbled concrete, brick, and more — and even by the surrounding landscape architecture.
In one property on High Dunes, Camens envisioned a beautiful, brick-patterned border around a pebbled concrete driveway. This brick resonated with the brickwork on steps that lead to the front entrance of the home, providing an elegant sense of visual continuity.
Brick also played an important role in another property on High Dunes, where a subtle edge of brick framed the driveway and then gracefully transitioned to the steps of a lower-level entrance. The same brick also served as cladding around the home.
Practical
Not only should a driveway be highly personalized to each property while boasting a unique sense of style and grace, but it also must be practical at the end of the day.
You can have the most aesthetically dazzling driveway in the world, but if it doesn’t function well, it loses all sense of purpose. For that reason, much attention must be paid to the relationship between the circulation pattern of vehicles on a property, garage entrance and exits, turning radiuses, and pedestrian footpaths.
This property on Green Meadow illustrates the impact of a gorgeous driveway that checks the box on form and function. It curves beautifully around the home to reach the multi-car garage while providing ample space for vehicle maneuvering and subtly signaling the paths of foot traffic.
